I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I’ve admitted this before. So we recorded the Edward Snowden interview and watched it later in the week, at an earlier time, when the old brain might be sharper.
It’s now been about a year since he took the secrets and started to spread them.
Obviously, he’d been well coached for this interview. He’s had some feedback on his arrogance and is trying to hide it, a bit. But all in all, it isn’t about him; it’s about this country and what is happening to it.
At the end of the interview, he mentioned that the country has changed since 9/11. Yup, shore has. Now the NSA can watch you think. As I write these blogs, I’ve wondered about that. Now I know.
I’ve maintained that The Powers That Be want us to be stupid, that we are being made stupid on purpose. Since Edward Bernays went to work, American’s have been sold on various fantasies. It’s hard work to cut through the lies and deceit. It’s depressing as hell. So not too many people try anymore. Easier, far easier, to put your head down, go to work (if you’re lucky enough to still have a job), take care of your immediate concerns, and ignore the rest.
So we do.
The fact that there is even debate about whether Edward Snowden is a whistle blower or a traitor is a measure of how far we’ve come as a country since Vietnam. The fact that Pvt Manning is in prison, denied what we would consider a fair trial, is a measure of how far we’ve gone to continue to keep our fantasies of what a wonderful nation we are intact.
John Kerry, our illustrious Secretary of State, calls on Mr. Snowden to “man up”.
We kill people with joysticks! Women, children, animals and men; we don’t care. From above, who can tell? Just drop those bombs, watch the body parts fly, no mess, nothing to clean up. I can’t imagine a much more cowardly way to make our point (whatever it is).
John Kirakou is in jail. For revealing water-boarding. The people doing the water-boarding remain free.
According to our “leaders”, up is down, wrong is right, reality is whatever we say it is.
I can’t even watch politics anymore. When a politician opens their mouth, lies fall out. Doesn’t matter if it’s the batshit crazy party or the business as usual party, both of them suck.
If someone actually tried to tell the American people the truth, they’d learn quick enough. Remember Jimmy Carter? Remember how much people hated him? He told us some semblance of the truth; that we had to change our lifestyles. Oh my, Ronald Reagan trounced him, bringing us a new day!
And we’re still living in it. Since Reagan, it’s been hard to tell the difference between the batshit crazy party and the business as usual party. Both of them just lie through their teeth. Because that is what we want.
So we pay no attention to the melting icecaps. Revelations of spying and assassination plots barely impress us. Wars over oil and gas make us yawn. Genocide and apartheid are words for the history books because we don’t know and don’t care what is happening around the world.
Just make sure we’ve got our cable television and games and we’ll let the powers that be do whatever the hell they want.
