“You have the entire scientific community saying we have to be very aggressive in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Yet you’re seeing the heads of coal companies and oil companies willing to sacrifice the well-being of the entire planet for their short term profits. And because of their power over the political process, you hear a deafening silence in the U.S. Congress and in other bodies around the world about the severity of the problem. Global warming is a far more serious problem than Al-Qaeda.”
That is Bernie Sanders speaking, the Independent Senator from Vermont and possibly the last good, honest man ever elected.
Bernie is another outlier, a socialist among rabid capitalists, one who puts the public good above profits.
The poor public. We are being failed by pretty much everyone who is supposed to give a shit. Politicians are hos and pimps, almost without exception. The NGOs, like 350.org, are following the same model. Bill McKibben has become a corporate shill, insisting that we can have our economic growth with some invented term like “renewables”, which don’t exist.
We built our civilization upon fossil fuels and didn’t have the foresight/restraint/will to conserve them carefully.
We built our civilization upon growth and didn’t put any limits on ourselves.
We still don’t.
Somewhere in a previous post, I said I feared that 2013 is maybe the last year we have a chance at saving the planet from extinction. No one knows where that tipping point is, and the problem with tipping points is that you only see them once you’re past them. Many people smarter than me say we’re cooked, nothing to be done, extinction is baked in regardless of what we do today. I’ve said it myself, and on many days, I believe it.
And yet, I still can’t quite believe that the human race is going to let itself be killed off without a fight. Whatever happened to our vaunted survival instinct?
