Happy Dance time

It’s a joyful day here in the Nobody household. A nationally known doctor – shortlisted for surgeon general by Obama – has come out in favor of marijuana legalization.

Dare I hope the moronic tide is turning? That some sanity might yet prevail in the American political arena?

It’s a marvelous plant is marijuana. We don’t even know all that much about it because our insane drug laws preclude research; they classify this wonderful plant we co-evolved with as having no medicinal value. What we do know is that it has a multitude of uses and possibilities.

I would dearly love to grow some and its cousin, hemp, a marvel in and of itself. So many uses for a weed that is also called ditch weed, and we deny availability because of some vague morality that had its basis in racism. There are many wonderful books and articles out there about the plant. If you don’t know that you’ve been lied to by your government about this plant, you should.

We tell sick people to suffer. We deny farmers and growers the opportunity to grow and market marijuana like wine – regulated and taxed – because of some unscientifically conducted study that made up the term “gateway drug.”

I’m sure there are people out there who shouldn’t ingest it. There are people out there who shouldn’t ingest Tylenol. It is simply a fact that Tylenol has killed more people than marijuana has. It is simply a fact that marijuana has killed no one. Zero.

I stopped voting for people who are gung-ho on the drug laws at least an election cycle ago. Doesn’t matter the party, I won’t vote for someone who is demonstrably stupid. Believing that marijuana should be illegal has already been proven to be demonstrably stupid.

I would like to see all of our drug laws re-examined. Punishment of addiction is insane – ask any doctor. Let’s treat addictions as medical problems and stop filling our prisons with non-violent offenders.

We could do all of this and justify it simply on a cost benefit ratio alone, but we should do all of this for humane, compassionate reasons. Do we have no empathy for sick people anymore?

(I marvel frequently at our species ability to tolerate suffering so well. So many suffer so much each day all over the world to make the shit we consume and nothing ever changes so why see it or feel it anymore? Become numb. Deaden empathy to feel no guilt. Then you can be happy.)

A people that can shrug off the pain of a person with M.S. or cancer or whatever it is that ails them is a people with serious sociopathic tendencies, wouldn’t you say?

Sanity seems to be prevailing in the whole who can marry whom debate and those moronic laws are tumbling. Dare I hope? Dare I hope for just a little more sanity? Dare I hope for one more crumb of a possibility that there is some good in human beings?
